Exercise

You’ll do this exercise with a partner; if you don’t have a partner then you will need a journal or simply answer the questions out loud. Let’s get to the heart of the matter. Before you begin this exercise you may want to put on some instrumental music that you feel is spiritual or soothing. It is important that it be instrumental so that you are not distracted by the words in the music. You might try Enya, Yanni, or some classical music.

Let’s begin by connecting with the part of you that causes you the most pain. What do you have a hard time dealing with? What do you struggle with the most? Connect to your heart. The place where your feelings and emotions live. Is your heart open or is it closed? Is part of it closed? Have you closed a part of your life off as a result? If so, why is it closed?

You will be doing an exercise around a time in your life where you closed off your heart, and it might be occurring right now. Notice any resistance you may have to this question during this process. Often times our surface i am will serve to protect, but is it really protecting or hindering healing or growth? It has been said that the only way out is through, and unexpressed hurt and pain will only stay if you don’t release it and let it go. It will serve as a magnet for more pain and sadness. You can’t selectively open up Pandora’s box. If you are blocking experiencing pain, you are also blocking the full expression of joy, love and so many other experiences we long to have as human beings. It might take courage to allow full expression, but you might find that on the other side of the expression there is relief, peace and joy. Give yourself some grace in this process and allow yourself to comprehend your experience knowing that it won’t always be there and trust that God has you in His/Her hands.

If you are participating with a partner select who will be partner A and who will be partner B. Partner A will go first and answer the following questions. Partner B, you will want to allow your partner to share for at least one or two minutes for each question. Partner A, don’t be afraid to repeat yourself, this is a stream of consciousness exercise designed to release and not to think. If you are doing this on your own, you will write out your answers or speak them out loud, whichever you prefer and feel will have the most impact.

Now, identify a time in your life where you closed off your heart and it may be occurring right now. Once you connect with that time, answer the following questions, taking a minute or two to answer each question:
